Learning To Meditate

Meditation Add comments

After chatting on a blog with someone who has chronic pain and suggesting this as a tool, I thought I’d post about meditation.  I’ve been meditating in some form or another for a lot of years, and have used it to help with a lot of problems in my life.  But for most people, especially if you are ADD like me, lol, it is hard to initially learn.  Here are some steps that might help.

1.  Pick a place to meditate you are not going to be disturbed. Lock yourself into a room…even if its the bathroom.  Nothing worse than being very deep in, and having someone startle you.

2.  Relaxing music with no words. When I was first learning, I had a Yani CD I’d put on and put earphones on, it was perfect for meditation and blocked out external noises that distracted me.  There are lots of internet radio stations that have healing/relaxing music you can listen to, or get a CD for one.

3.  Lay down flat on your back if it is more relaxing than sitting. They always picture people sitting in the lotus position meditating, but that isn’t always the most comfy position for most people.  I meditate a lot flat on my back.

4.  The rainbow countdown I use This is a meditation technique I read in a book many years ago.  I count down from 7 to 1 and picture a blank TV screen with the numbers on it, and try to visualze that.  In addition, the numbers are colored from the rainbow spectrum. ROYGBIV is the acronym to help remember them.

7.  RED  6. ORANGE  5. YELLOW  4. GREEN  3.BLUE 2. INDIGO  1. VIOLET

Usually by the time I get to 4. Green, I still picture the numbers, but I picture being in a forest with green leaves all round with a hole of a cave in the middle.  I crawl into the cave, and it darkens into the indigo and violet then I’m in a big chamber that is lit with candles, studded with crystals.  There I feel safe and meditate on what my goal is for the meditation.

It is important to build a room / cave / space that YOU feel safe in and comfortable.  It doesn’t matter what it looks like, what matters is it is YOUR space.

There, you can ask for your higher power to help you with a problem, goal.  Maybe help with pain.  You can pray to God, Jesus, The Goddess, Mother Earth, Father Sky or possibly ask angles or guardian spirts to help.  I tend to meet different people in meditation…it really depends on what my goal is, and who you are comfortable with.

Meditation is good for people of any faith to help them get closer to their higher power and the universal spirt that flows through all living things.

Remember to count yourself back out when you are done.  You don’t have to use the numbers, but visualize yourself “coming back to reality” gradually.  When you are fully out, take a minute or two to come back to the real world.  If you are new at this, it is also good to “ground” yourself.  Drink a few sips of water, or eat a few bites of something.

Don’t worry if you can’t stay in a meditative state for more than a few minutes at first.  Your brain is going to mess with you and probably try and tell you all the things you SHOULD be doing instead of lying/sitting here and doing this.  Try to dismiss the problems and focus on the numbers/colors (if you are still counting down).  It takes practice like any skill to turn your brain off to distractions.  But it is an excellent skill to learn if you can do it.

Meditation helps lower stress. They are showing in studies that daily meditation can even lower the risk of deases like heart attacks and lower blood pressure. It is also shown to help relieve pain for people, or learn to block pain, and studies have shown that long-term meditation has helped reduce the brains reaction to pain. It is never to late, to learn to meditate.

I hope this helps you on your path to better health.
